His uncle, Abu'l-Hasan Sani al-Mulk, was a celebrated watercolor portraitist; his father, Mirza Bozorg Ghaffari Kashani, founded Iran's painting school; and his brother, Abu Torab Ghaffari, was also a distinguished painter. Mohammad developed an early interest in calligraphy and painting, drawing charcoal sketches on his bedroom walls. After primary education, he moved to Tehran, possibly studied with Mirza Esma'il, and then registered at Dar-ul-Funun, where he studied painting for three years under Mozayyen-od-Doleh, a painter who had studied Western art in Europe. During his school days, he was given the name Mirza Mohammad Kashi and began to attract public attention as a talented artist. Naser al-Din Shah Qajar noticed Mohammad during visits to Dar-ul-Funun and invited him to court, where he improved his technique and was given the title 'Kamal-ol-Molk' (Perfection on Land). He developed his oil painting technique, independently acquiring and applying the laws of perspective, and was distinguished by his delicate brushwork and bright, lively colors. There he discussed style and technique with European artists, copied works by Rembrandt, and studied works by Raphael and Titian. Increasing pressure from Mozaffar ad-Din Shah's court forced Kamal-ol-Molk to leave Iran for Iraq, where he visited holy cities and produced works such as 'Karbala-ye-Moalla Square' and 'Baghdad Jewish Fortune Tellers'. After two years, with the advent of the Constitutional Movement, he returned to Iran and joined the Constitutionalists, painting portraits like 'Commander Asa'd Bakhtiari' and 'Azad-ol-Molk'. In the post-Constitutional era, he established the Sanaye Mostazrafeh Art School, known as the Kamal-ol-Molk Art School, to find and educate new talents. He introduced other arts and crafts—carpet weaving, mosaic designing, and woodwork—to revive dying fine arts, and he taught love, morals, and humanity, often staying late and using part of his salary for poor students.
